Maps, Westmorland? and Cumberland? in a set of playing cards published by W Redmayne et al, London, 1676.
Published in 'Recreative pastime by Card-play; Geographical, Chronological, and Historiographical. of England and Wales; shewing the commodities and Rarities of each County. Very useful for all Travellers ... By a long Student in the Mathematicks. Sold by W. Redmayne at the Crown on Addle Hill; Henry Mortlock at the Phoenix, Robert Turner at the Star, in St. Paul's Church-yard; H. Cox in Holborn; and B. Billingsley at the Printing Press in Cornhill.' 1676.
The map is said to be small and distorted and have neither compass point or scale; it shows the county boundary, county town, rivers, and scattered trees and hills; there is limited descriptive text. The suit mark is engraved in the middle of the county.
Published again as 'Geographical, Chronological, and Historiographical, Cards of England and Wales. Sold formerly for 1s., now newly done, and sold at 6d. a Pack. By W. Redmayne at the Crown on Addle Hill.' 1677.
In uncoloured examples, red is shown by vertical lines, black by cross hatching.
Published with other entertaining packs of cards '... County Cards, wherein is exactly describ'd the Situation, Climate, Soil, Customs, Manners, and commodities of every County in England, with the natural and artificial Rarities, and exact Maps of each Place curiously delineated ... Sold by John Lenthall, Stationer, at the Talbot against St. Dunstan's-Church, Fleetstreet, London.' 1717.
The playing cards remain available from various retailers up to about 1754.
