Maps, Westmorland the ace of clubs, and Cumberland the
two of clubs, in a set of playing cards published by John
Lenthall, London, 1717.
The map is a copy of Morden's playing card map, 1676; suit marks are engraved with bars or cross hatching, and have no arabic numeral below the suit mark; Morden's 'Bredth' and 'Lattitude' become 'Breadth' and 'Latitude'. Advertised by John Lenthall '... For the Improvement of the agreeable Diversion of Card-Playing, this Day are published 20 entertaining Packs of Cards, curiously engraven on Copper Plates, Sold by J. Lenthall, ... Map-cards, describing the 52 Counties of England and Wales, each Card being a distinct Map, shewing the Length, Breadth and Circumference of each County; the Latitude, Situation and Distance from London, of the principal Cities, Towns, and Rivers, both by the reputed and measured Miles. Also a Compass for the Bearings to every Town, and a Scale for Mensuration of the Distances. ... The playing cards remain available up to about 1750.
