NOTES from MORDEN'S MAP of ROADS IN ENGLAND AND WALES,
c1690.

These notes are taken from a the Map of roads in of England
and Wales by Robert Morden, The Atlas, Cornhill, published
by him and Joseph Pask, Three Ink Bottles, Castle Alley,
Royal Exchange, London, about 1690. The map studied is in
the British Library, item K.Top.V.86.

The map size is: wxh, sheet = 52.5x62cm; wxh, map =
510x588mm.

Printed upper right is a scroll cartouche supported by
cherubs, decorated with fruit and foliage. Above there is a
figure of Mercury, with winged helmet and his caduceus, the
wand with serpents twined around it. And there is an
illustration of riders in a cartouche. The title is:-
Itinerarium ANGLIAE or a Map of Roads. Wherein are Contained
all the Road Waies And the Principall Cross Roads, with the
Computed Distances and ye Distinction of the Market, Post
Towns &c. in ENGLAND & WALES.
Sold by Robt. Morden at the Atlas in Corn-hill and by Jos.
Pask at the 3 Ink Bottles in Castle Ally ath the West end of
the Royall Exchange London.

The Explanation of this MAP.
The double Lines thus [double line, broad] Represent ye
Great Roads.
The Lesser double Lines [double lines, narrow] the Cross
Roads.
The Figures 1, 2, 3, 4 &c gives the distance between Town &
Town as from London to Barnet 10 Miles and from Barnet to
St. Albens 10.
[circle, buildings and towers] This mark signifie a Cittie
or Shire Town.
[circle and cross(+)] A Market Town or a Post Town.
[circle] A Parish or Village
[anchor] This the Chief Harbors or Sea Ports.

Printed on the right is a compass rose; star points for
cardinal directions, lines for half cardinal directions,
North marked by a fleur de lys, East by a cross. The map is
printed with North at the top of the sheet.

The decoration includes fruit and flowers, wings,
trumpets, caduceuses, and the royal coat of arms of William
and Mary (approximate blazon):-
quarterly 1 and 4 quarterly i and iv azure three fleur de
lys or ii and iii gules three lions passant guardant or 2 or
a lion rampant gules in a double tressure florey counter
florey 3 azure a harp or stringed argent; an escutcheon
azure seme [bars upright or???] and a lion rampant or

Roads are shown by broader or narrower double lines.
There is one Great Road in Westmorland, Cumberland etc:-
from the south, through Lancaster, Lancashire; then
Burton, 7 to Kendal, 4 Kanesdale Horse, 6 Stone Heaps, 3
Thrumby, Westmorland; 5 to Penreth, 7 Hasket, 5 Carlton, 3
Carlile, 7 Longtown, 7 Kirksope, Cumberland; 8 to
Hermmitage, Scotland; and on to Barwick, Northumberland.
