Map Features

sea area
sea pecked
The sea area is depicted by small peck marks.

coast line
coast shaded
The coast line is emphasized by shading.

rivers Rivers are drawn by a curvy double line tapering to a point at the head. The rivers shown need careful interpretation. One oddity is a circular river around Cockermouth and Keswick drained by a stream to the Solway Coast at Workington - that's what is shown.
A couple of rivers are labelled:-
Eden flu
[Lann] flu [the Lune through Lancaster]

lakes One lake is drawn, at the head of one of the headwaters of the Kent; it is not reasonable to suggest what lake it might be, nor which river it is on.
The circular river might be a misunderstanding of a lake outline on the source made available to Mercator?

relief
hillocks
A knot of mountains is shown by knobbly hillocks on the central Lakes area. This is divided in two by the headwaters of the Duddon and ?Eamont.

county There are no county boundaries, but some county areas are labelled, in the Cumbria area:-
Comberland
Lancaster
but not Westmorland. The labels are split up on the sheet.

settlements Settlements are marked by a circle with added elements, all labelled in italic lowercase text. Differentiation of type of settlement is uncertain and unreliable.
cities circle, buildings, tower; labelled in italic lowercase text:-
Karlhyll
towns circle, building, tower; labelled in italic lowercase text, eg:-
Kerk by [ ]endale
Apelbe
villages circle, tower; labelled in italic lowercase text, eg:-
Myllum
