View of Appleby Castle, Westmorland, the seat of the Earl of Thanet. Appleby Castle set on top of wooded hill in distance. A shepherd and his flock can be seen walking down a track leading below the castle. On the right two women are seen walking in the same direction. On the left a house set in woodland. The Castle is set on top of a wooded hill. One of a set of eight 'Drawings for a Pocket Book' intended to be engraved executed on the spot by the artist. Eight drawings pasted to one piece of paper all executed in pencil, brown wash and white gouache.
