Painting, watercolour, Holmrook Hall, about 1816.
Summertime; Holmrook Hall, viewed from the driveway leading
to the front of the house, its facade partially covered in
creepers. A lawn lies in front of the house and treetops are
visible behind it.
The work was accompanied by a letter dated 28 July 1816,
from Ellen Hankey to Emily Fuller in which she writes;
'Holmrook; there was noone living there, so we were shown
all over the house and gardens and certainly I never saw a
lovelier spot. The house stands on a grassy terrace, hanging
over the clear winding stream of the Irt, and there is much
beautiful wood which makes a foreground to a splendid view
of a mountain range of very varied shapes. Of all the places
I ever saw, I think I should like to live there the best.'
Ellen Blake was born at Holmrook 5 August 1802 and baptised
at Irton. She married John Alexander Hankey at St George's,
Hanover Square 30 August 1825.
