Print, coloured, A Carlisle Celebrity, Sam Bough RSA, Carlisle, Cumberland, by Joseph W Simpson, 1925.
Depiction of Sam Bough in late middle age, dressed in three piece suit and bowler hat, standing beside River Eden with walking stick under his left arm whilst making a pencil sketch. Behind him, to right of composition, stands Eden Bridge; the city of Carlisle lies beyond.
An engraving of Bough in the same stance, though without the topographical setting, was executed by Robert Anderson in 1879, CALMG:1964.119.6. This was taken from a photograph of Bough shortly before his death. The present work is likely, therefore, to have been adapted from one of these sources.
