Sam Bough, dressed in a three piece suit and bowler hat stands with walking stick under left arm whilst making a pencil sketch with a view of Carlisle from Stanwix in the background.
Taken either from the lithograph by Robert Anderson dated 1879, CALMG:1964.119.6, or from the photograph Anderson worked from, with the background substituted for one of Carlisle. The design was used for the Thurnham's calendar of 1926.
