Drawing, Cowrin Hill Cut, Looking West, Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, Cowran Cutting, Hayton, Cumberland, by John Wilson Carmichael, 1835.
View of the railway cutting, foreshortened. Groups of figures, some leading horses, are at work at various points along the tracks. To either side of the cutting lie woodland and fields with hills beyond. A distant view of wooded countryside is visible through the far end of the cutting.
Carmichael executed 22 pencil drawings of the construction of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway at the suggestion of the Rail Company.
