Painting, watercolour portrait, John Heysham MD, The
Eminent Cumberland Naturalist, Cumberland, about 1790.
Three quarter length portrait of John Heysham approaching
middle age, seated at a table, facing right, his features
viewed in profile. He examines a small pink flower held in
his left hand. On the table in front of him stand several
books and a glass beaker containing a further specimen of
the plant. On a wooden perch beside it stands a falcon, its
head turned to watch him. Heysham wears cream breeches, a
blue jacket and white stock. He also wears a powdered wig.
