Painting, watercolour, Carlisle Market Place, Carlisle, Cumberland, by Matthew Ellis Nutter, about 1835.
Market square, virtually deserted, a few vendors setting up their stalls beside the market cross in centre of composition. The town hall stands behind it. To right of foreground a woman pauses outside a shop with bow window, a basket over her arm; she holds a small boy by the hand. This may be a view taken from St Cuthbert's Lane.
