half length portrait of Nutter as a young man, facing front,
his head turned to the left and his gaze directed away from
the viewer. He wears a velvet cap trimmed with fur and a
black jacket with claret coloured waistcoat and cravat. He
sits with a canvas on his knee, held upright by his left
hand. He is depicted in a studio interior with heavy crimson
drapes and, to left, a classical column.
