Painting, oil painting, Reynard Triumphant, by Matthias
Read, Whitehaven, Cumberland, about 1730.
Autumnal landscape with ruined castle standing in the middle
distance to right. Beside the gnarled roots of a tree in
centre of composition a fox crouches with a partially
featherless hen gripped between his forepaws. Three wildcats
have surrounded him and he turns to snarl at two of them
defensively. After Frans Snyder.
The work originally hung at the Grapes Inn, Carlisle.
