Map, 4 sheets, uncoloured engraving, Plan of the County of Westmorland, scale about 1 1/4 inches to 1 mile, surveyed 1823-25 by Thomas Hodgson, engraved by W Gardner, Harpur Street, London, published by Thomas Hodgson, Lancaster, Lancashire, 1828.
The map identifies some of the OS survey stations - 'HELVELLYN 3055 Feet According to the Ordnance Survey the Second highest Mountain in England SCA FELL being 3166 Feet Above Low Water Mark / A Station in the Ordnance Survey of England', 'CROSS FELL 2901 Feet A Station in the Ordnance Survey of England', 'WATER CRAG 2186 Feet A Station in the Ordnance Survey of England' and 'THE CALF 2188 Feet A Station in the Ordnance Survey of England'.
Some local placenames are recorded alongside the ?conventional name, eg 'CACHEDECAM called locally Calsly Cam' and 'Strathon Edge called locally Striding Edge'; and there might be interesting comments like 'Boundary Variable with the Channel' of the Winnster and Kent between Westmorland and Lancashire, and close by 'HOLME ISLAND which as the Low Water Channel varies is sometimes in Westmord. & Lancashire alternately.'
