Map, uncoloured manuscript, of the River Kent and Castle
Mills, Kendal, Westmorland, scale about 1 to 2500, perhaps
late 19th century.
The plan shows the River Kent and mill streams from Stramongate Bridge to just above Nether Bridge, the focus of the map is Castle Mills, for which buildings now pulled down and those standing, and the positions of water wheels, are noted. Places labelled are Stramongate Bridge, High Wear, Goose Holme, Stramongate Mill, J Irelands Weir, Low Weir, Aynum Bridge, Mill Bridge (ancient, now gone, and present bridge), Miller Close, and a series of weirs below Mill Bridge, for T Cookson, J Harrison, G and J Braithwaite, R and J Greenhows, Wilkinson and Hindle, and 'J Brinnan the Plaintifs weir'. This last label suggest the plan might have been prepared for a court case. The scale line has no units, but chains make sense. |
