Carlisle Library : Map 208

Railway map, uncoloured lithograph, Map of the Railway between Carlisle and Lancaster, scale about 4 miles to 1 inch, drawn by William Doeg, engraved and published by Scott and Benson, Carlisle, Cumberland, 1847.
The map was folded and tipped into a Handbook to the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway.
The railways shown are - Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, open 1836; Maryport and Carlisle Railway, open 1840-45; Lancaster and Carlisle Railway, open 1846; and Kendal and Windermere Railway, open 1846-47.
What is 'up' on the map is not simple. Unfolded in its book the railway runs left to right, Carlisle to Lancaster, East at the top, andthe title is along the lower edge. But placename labels are at a 45 degree angle, and station names at 90 degrees, so that the map can be read with Lancaster at the bottom, North at the top.
