Guide book, A Descriptive Guide to the English Lakes, by
Jonathan Otley, 1823, published by Jonathan Otley, Keswick,
Cumberland, by Simpkin, Marshall and Co, Stationers' Court,
London, and by Arthur Foster, Kirkby Lonsdale, Westmorland,
7th edn 1843.
The guide book is rebound in cloth by Riley Dunn and Wilson.
It has:- frontispiece, map; title page with illustration of
Scroggs, preface, contents list, table of symbols for the
map; pp.1-220 descriptive text including illustrations and
plates of outline views, itineraries; notes on botany,
geology, meteorology, floating island in Derwent Water,
black lead mine at Seathwaite; appendix, Lonsdale and the
Caves; index; list of illustrations.
Scroggs Farm, Loughrigg, illustrated on the title page, is
where Jonathan Otley was born. The outline views are the
'third type' as described for the 8th edition.
The map is recorded separately.
