NOTES from BERRY'S MAP of the GRAND ROADS of ENGLAND,
1679

These notes are taken from the map of the Grand Roads of
England Shewing all the Towns you pass through, by William
Berry, at the Sign of the Globe, between Charing Cross and
Whitehall, London, 1679. The item studied is in the map
Library, British Library, item Maps[star]1205(1)

The 'map' is a diagram without any geographical outline of
the country. The map size is: wxh, sheet = 41x48.5cm; wxh,
map = 393x469mm.

The city and town symbols are graduated in size, but not
awfully easy to tell apart. The cross for a post town is
added by the town symbol

The major roads radiating from London are drawn by double
lines out from the capital, which is in the lower right part
of the map. Places are listed along the straight line route,
with distances given between them. Some bits of route, which
do not fit, are drawn alongside their parent route. County
names are given alongside the route. The post-town symbol
(+) is used with villages and towns, representing a post
stage.
The roads in Westmorland, Cumberland etc are, with road
distances and market days, placenames as given:-
