Sir Adam d'Yreton was a crusader knight, a Knight of St John of Jerusalem. He died 1096, a cross slab said to have marked his grave was found in St Paul's Church in 1856, called the d'Yreton Stone. Sir Adam is said to have cut off the head of a Saracen general with one blow of his sword. The Irton Family crest includes a Saracen's head.
Henry VI is said to have hidden in a large oak tree in the grounds, during the Wars of the Roses, 1464.
