notes:- |
Home of the Derwentwater Recluse, Major General Sir John George Woodford KSB. He had
served with Sir John Moore at Corunna, and on the Duke of Wellington's staff at Waterloo.
He lived here for 40 years, 1839-79 in a house full of old furniture, coins, books,
antiques; but did not receive the local gentry or pay any calls. He put hoardings
round the building to stop tourists gaping in. He took his walks at night, was chatty
with whomever he met, and was fond of children. |
