"It has been very difficult to glean any information about Milnthorpe shipping, but
the tradition is that there was no wharf at Milnthorpe, but that each ship, coming
in on the full tide, proceeded up the Bela on the tide, until she ran aground, when
she was propped upright, by stakes driven into the mud, and the cargo transferred
by planks from the shore, to wagons. Later she took in her outward cargo and remained
passive till she was carried down by the ebb of the next tide." |
