Th Cumberland Mining and Smelting Co erected blast furnaces here, beginning 1867.
By the 1870s there were six furnaces, replaced by four of more advanced design. The
works were taken over by Millom and Askham Hemataite Iron Co in an amalgamation with
an ironworks in Askam in Furness, in 1890. The Askam works were abandoned, demolished
in 1938. The works were nationalised, then denationalised, becoming the Millom Hematite
Ore and Iron Co. The plant was closed 1969. |
