Started by the North of England Hematite Co, 1872. The first blast furnace operated
from 1873. Fueled by coke, which came from Durham; steam powered blowing. A third
furnace was begun by new owners, the Lowther Hematite Iron Co, late 1870s. One furnace
operated by new owners, the Workington Iron and Steel Co, from 1911. Closed late 1911. |
