Incorporated about 1870, Isaac Armstrong and others, the Solway Hematite Iron Co.
The first two blast furnaces were lit January 1871. Fueled by coke; steam powered
blowing. Production had its ups and downs. One of the furnaces once produced a record
amount, 804 tons of pig iron in a week. Ceased 1927; demolished 1939.
