hearsay:- |
Cobbles were regularly collected from the beach hereabout, taken to Liverpool and Runcorn, perhaps as ballast for sailing ships. This damaged the coast. Villagers from Bootle and Whitbeck got fed up with this and on one occasion, near Stub Place, fought off the sailors in the Battle of Annaside. |
