The Broughton Coal Co and John Christian built a 2½mile wooden waggonway to Maryport Harbour, 1755. This ran over 'arches' at Ewanrigg, a brick viaduct 18 feet high.
The wayleave for the line from the arches to the harbour expired in 1786, and from that date the coal had to be taken on by cart.
