In the late 18th century a club of members of the Egremont Hunt sponsored a local
race meeting. The Cumberland Pacquet, December 1795:-
"[The Egremont Hunt ended on Wednesday. The field sport on Monday and Tuesday was perhaps
equal to anything of the kind ever enjoyed by the lovers of the chase, and the meeting,
in point of convivial harmony, has not been excelled on any former occasion since
the institution of this society - which was originally framed for the purpose of cultivating
friendly intercourse among the gentlemen of the country, and for improving rural diversion
of the charms of conversation.]"
And a report of 19 September 1812:-
"[Egremont Races on St. Bees Moor: A match of ~50 and a purse of gold not less than
5gs.; also a good saddle and bridle for horses; an ass race and a dog race will also
be run. Two very good hats for men. The horses to enter upon the race ground at 4
o'clock precisely, and subject to conditions then proposed by the stewards. Mr. Isaac
Banks, Mr. William Wood, Mr. George Stable, stewards.]"
