Races were held her since 'early times' on a course in the Holme by the side of the
River Esk, in April. As well as races there was cock fighting.

At a five day meeting 5 May 1788, in addition to the prize money for running three
heats out of four, of 4 miles each, the winners received presents of ~10 and ~20 each
on the first two days ...
