"At Newby, close to the shore, a little west of the Annan, are the remains of a castle: some fragments of walls of enormous thickness lie scattered about the ground, and the foundations of the building still appear in ridges covered with earth, from which we may collect that it was of immense size. It was built by one of the Bruces, Lords of Annandale."
