Set into the garden wall of a house overlooking Esthwaite Water. This unusual box,
with its curved top and "letters only" casting, is a lamp box originally designed
to be fixed be fixed to a street lamp. This idea was introduced for the convenience
of town and city dwellers who wished to post letters after daylight. Because the boxes
were small and therefore cheaper to produce, some of them found their way into rural
locations where only a small volume of mail was posted, sometimes being set into walls
because there was nothing to attach them to. |
