The signalman here, a railway policeman, was John Kent, an Afro-Carribean. It is said that
"the youthful Prince of Wales, passing through Carlisle shortly after the publication of Mrs. Stoke's 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', saw John in the signal box and asked his attendants if that was Uncle Tom in his cabin"
