hearsay:- |
Shaddongate was the focus of riots during electioneering, 6 June 1826; the Corn Laws
being the underlying problem. The Riot Act was read by the mayor, and the 55th Regiment
of Foot called in to disperse the rioters. They fired at the crowds and at nearby
dwellings, a number of innocent adults and children were killed. Unrest continued
for several days. |
