Quakers could not use the churchyards attached to the anglican church, so needed a
place to bury their dead. |

The first Friend to die and be buried here, in Richard Robinson's apple orchard, was
Rebecca Langle, 1656. After several more burials the plot was bought from Mr Robinson,
perhaps the first purchase of land by the Religious Society of Friends, 1660. |

Raising headstones was sanctioned in 1850; of a uniform size and shape. Stone tablets
on the stable wall to the south commemorate Friends whose ashes are scattered here. |
