"EXTERIOR: A World War I memorial unveiled soon after the end of the Great War in 1919. It stands in the grounds of Cartmel Grange Nursing Home close to the exit to Allithwaite Road. The memorial is made of concrete and consists of a standing male soldier, about three quarters life size, dressed in WWI uniform and cap complete with rifle held at ease by the right hand. The soldier stands on a flat round base which sits on top of a moulded rectangular base. The whole is raised on top of a rectangular base of concrete that has a modern inscribed polished marble plaque attached to its front that reads 'PRESENTED / BY THE / NORMANTON CENTRAL / LIBERAL CLUB / IN MEMORY OF CLUB MEN FALLEN / 1914-1919 / LET NOT HIS MEMORY FADE'. This rectangular concrete base stands on a wider moulded base." "HISTORY: The World War I memorial located in the grounds of Cartmel Grange Nursing Home, Grange-over-Sands, was presented by the Normanton Central Liberal Club near Wakefield in West Yorkshire, to the Working Men's Club and Institute Union soon after the end of the Great War in 1919 in memory of members of the club, some of whom may have been nursed at the convalescent home built here between 1912-14. At an unspecified date the war memorial was moved to another part of the nursing home grounds and it was listed in this location in 2004. Since then a project grant-aided under the English Heritage/Wolfson Foundation War Memorials Grant Scheme led to the memorial being repaired and relocated as close as possible to its original location. The repair work included the replacement of the stone panel bearing the inscription. The original broken panel is currently displayed nearby. The restoration was carried out on behalf of Brancaster Homes in November 2007 by Able Memorials &Lakeland Creations. The memorial is a rare example of the use of concrete as a sculptural medium for war memorials at that time. It is also believed to be an unusual example of the commemoration of men who belonged to a specific national organisation, presented by a particular local group who were from a place some distance removed from the memorial's location."
