source data:- | courtesy of English Heritage "Farmbuilding, originally a gunpowder magazine belonging to the London Lead Company. Probably early C19. Coursed rubble with stone flag pyramidal roof. Square plan, with inserted cross wall (and later temporary farm shelters abutting). Single original doorway in walls 18"-20" thick: small windows look later, probably made by enlarging ventilation slits. Massively constructed roof with central post supported by cross ties, raked struts to alternate principals, corner ties, and substantial wall plates. Flag floor 2 later doorways associated with its post-industrial use as a cattle/sheep shed. Note: a deed of 1782 records the conveyance of a magazine to the London Lead Company (which dominated Nenthead); the present building probably post- dates the company's acquisition." |
