notes:- |
The house was built for his bailiff, by Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland, 1598.
A plaster ceiling on the first floor is dated 1598, and with it, above the fireplace,
is the coat of arms of the earl. The estate of Cockermouth came to the Percy Family
by marriage to Maud, descendant of Antony de Luci who received the estate as a reward
for capturing Andrew de Harcla in the 14th century. The estate came on condition that
the arms of Lucy were quartered with her husband's. |
|
Henry Percy, 9th earl, was born 1564. He owned many estates in the north of England, though his major property was Pentworth, Sussex. Although slightly deaf and slow of speech, he was a gifted scientist, known as the Wizard Earl. |
||
As a catholic, and a relative of Thomas Percy, he was suspected of being involved
in the Gunpowder Plot. Nothing was proved, and he was not named by any of the other
plotters. But he was convicted on other charges and imprisoned in the Tower of London
until 1621. he died at Pentworth, 1632/ |
