The castle was begun by Edward I during the Wars of Scottich independence, about 1300. At first it was a timber construction, but about 1364 it was rebuilt in stone.
Since it was abandoned the ashlar facing of the walls has been stolen away for use elsewhere, leaving exposed the rubble infill. Remaining patches of ashlar can be seen here and there.
