source data:- | courtesy of English Heritage "Lime Kiln. Early C19. Rubble carboniferous Limestone. Tapering square Kiln body, set into a limestone outcrop to the rear (north-east). Kiln approx 6 metres square, with central semi-circular arched entry into kiln draw passage. Semi-circular arch with dressed limestone voussoirs. Draw hole with canopy flagstones supported by iron bars. Kiln chamber lined with sandstone, now partially collapsed. The kiln was constructed by the Wilkinson family, who were iron makers, after the Witherslack enclosure award of 1829, presumably to supply burnt lime for the improvement of land for agricultural improvement. A well preserved and complete example of early C19 kiln construction." |
