These are called sole structures, they are sedimentary sandstones and mudstones laid
down in deep water, the bumps caused by hard pieces which settled first and were covered
by finer material. Later the beds have been tipped on their sides by geological folding.
The rocks are Coniston Grits of the Silurian period. There are about 6 (?) beds of
this type in the quarry. |
