Set up by Workington Hematite Iron Co incorporated 1856, commenced operation 1859.
Coke fuel; steam powered blowing. There were some problems with the processes which
were corrected by Bessemer, and the works became a major source for 'Bessemer' iron
for steel making. There were six furnaces operating by 1870. After many years, and
changes, the plant closed in 1930. |
