notes:- |
A porch and one small room, with a loft above, no more. |
|
A minute book for the new school, 1857 onwards:- |
||
"Raisbeck School formerly stood in the Hollow Green." |
||
"At the time of the enclosure of Raisbeck Common about the year 1780 it was rebuilt
on its present site by Mr. John Whinfield of Raisbeck Mr. Robert Bowness of Raisbeck
and Mr. Clearsby of New House - and since that time it has been taught by a Schoolmaster
or a Schoolmistress appointed by the above gentlemen or their representatives" |
||
"At this date viz AD 1857 it being in bad repair and unfit for use as a Schoolhouse
a public meeting of the inhabitants has been called to consider in what manner it
can be best repaired. The said meeting is accordingly held in the Schoolhouse this
25th. day of February 1857 ..." |
||
and agee to repair the school. It continued as a school for many years, as well as
occasional other uses. Local memories passed on from older relations says:- |
||
"The old dame sat with her back to the fire while we sat on forms in front of her" |
||
... and she kept hens in the porch. |
||
Now it is restored to safety, listed, and is one of the tiniest and most unassuming
interpretive centres I have ever seen. It is quietly advertised - a notice on the
door says 'Come in'. |
