| hearsay:-   |
A poor boy called Robert Bateman was given a small sum by a subscription in the parish,
which enabled him to walk to London. There he worked for a merchant, and became a
partner in the firm. He was a trader in Leghorn, Italy, and became wealthy. At the
age of 64, 1743, he set out for England, to retire to a new home at Ings - Reston
Hall, which he had arranged to be built. On the journey home he was poisoned by the
captain of the ship, who stole his cargo and returned to Italy. A portrait of Robert
Bateman used to hang in the house. |
