Prompted by George Stephenson's idea of the Grand Caledonian Junction Railway. Surveyed by John Hague, for a local committee, 1838. Crossing the Lancaster Sands by an embankment in a direct line from Poulton, Morecambe to Leonard's Point, Furness; crossing the Duddon Sands by an embankment; with a branch line to Ulverston. More detailed planning by John U Rastrick, 1838-39; renamed the West Cumberland Railway and Morecambe Bay Inclosure Company.
