Promoted as part of the East and West Yorkshire Union Railway; plans submitted to Parliament 1864. After various objections the westerly part was promoted as the Furness and Lancaster and Carlisle Union Railway. It was formally abandoned in favour of the Arnside to Hincaster branch.
