 On the road towards High Newton from Ayside there is a quarry. For some years a man lived there beneath an upturned boat; until 'he died as quietly as he had lived'. He was said to have been an excellent stone waller and hedger, and worked for local farmers. He didn't get paid for one walling job; so he went back and knocked it all down.
