'On the estate of John Harrison. Esq. of Hundhow, and a short way from Burneside,
there is a large Oak tree known by the name of the 'Four Brothers', the circumference
of which, two feet from the ground, is fifteen feet and ten inches. It then branches
off at from three to six feet from the ground into four regular sized trees, whose
girth twelve feet from the ground, is from five-and-a-half to six-and-a-half feet.
The height of the tree is about fifteen yards. Mr Harrison has been offered the sum
of L60 for it; but he states his determination, that, in his lifetime, it shall not
be cut down.' |
