hearsay:-
Incorporated 26 June 1846. Robert Stephenson recommended that the Clapham to Low Gill section be abandoned in favour of completing the Lancaster and Carlisle route. Work had advanced as far as Ingleton so the rest was completed, as a single line branch. Opened to Ingleton, 30 July 1849. The line was caught in the wranglings between the London North Western Railway and the Midland Railway over routes from London to Scotland.
