Incorporated 26 June 1846. Robert Stephenson recommended that the Clapham to Low Gill
section be abandoned in favour of completing the Lancaster and Carlisle route. Work
had advanced as far as Ingleton so the rest was completed, as a single line branch.
Opened to Ingleton, 30 July 1849. The line was caught in the wranglings between the
London North Western Railway and the Midland Railway over routes from London to Scotland. |
