visits made 1979-82. Geological Outing of the Kendal and District Mine Research Society Log book page 7:- "DATE - SUNDAY 22/4/79 / MAP REF - MAP NY61 6595 1115 / LOCATION - GT ASBY FELLS. ORTON SCAR / NAME - WINDERWATH MINE (NAME GIVEN TO THIS MINE BY US) / TYPE OF SITE - MINE / WORKING OR DISUSED - DISUSED / PEOPLE IN PARTY [ ] / NOS. OF PHOTOS - No.56. / SPECIMENS FOUND - SMALL NODULES OF CALCITE AND PIECES OF FLOW LIMESTONE. / COMMENTS - THIS MINE IS SUPPOSED TO BE COPPER MINE, ALTHOUGH NO TRACE OF ANY COPPER MINERALS WERE FOUND. VERY WET MINE, VERY CLAYEY, WITH SILT. FIRST PART OF MINE ARCH WALLED, TURNING INTO BOULDER CLAY AFTER 20 YDS AND BOULDER CLAY CONTINUES ON AND OFF THROUGHOUT ALL THE MINE COVERED TODAY. FLOW LIMESTONE COVERS A GOOD MAJORITY OF THE WALLS AND FLOOR. MINE APPEARS TO FOLLOW A FAULT. STOPPED AFTER ABOUT ¼MILES WHERE TUNNEL SPLITS INTO TWO WILL GO DOWN AGAIN WITH MORE EQUIPMENT PEOPLE AND CAMERA." Log book pages 8-9:- "DATE - SUNDAY 6/5/79 / MAP REF - NY61 6575 1115 (MAP REF FOR BELL PITS 6570 1150) / LOCATION - GT ASBY FELLS. ORTON SCAR / NAME - / TYPE OF SITE - MINE / WORKING OR DISUSED - DISUSED / PEOPLE IN PARTY [ ] / NOS. OF PHOTOS - No.6 / SPECIMENS FOUND - SPECIMENS FOUND IN MINE WERE VERY SMALL, CONSISTING OF SMALL PIECES OF MALACHITE ON CALCITE. SPECIMENS FOUND ON THE SCAR, ON THE RIGHT OF THE MINE, IN BELL PITS AND HEAPS, ABOUT 100 YDS AWAY, WERE VERY GOOD, CONSISTING OF LARGE PIECES OF ARAGONITE, MALACHITE AND COPPER PYRITES. / COMMENTS - FIRST PART OF MINE WAS AS LAST VISIT. 22/4/79/ TOOK THE RIGHT HAND TUNNEL, WATER ABOUT 1'-2' DEEP CLAYEY, TUNNEL IS IN LIMESTONE AND ENDS IN A LIMESTONE FACE AFTER ABOUT 30 YDS. CAME BACK TOO (sic) FORK AND TOOK LEFT HAND TUNNEL VERY CLAYEY, NO POOLS OF WATER THOUGH, GYPSUM CRYSTALS APPEAR HERE AND THERE SINGLY, IN CLAY ON WALLS. VERY SMALL PIECES OF MALACHITE ARE FOUND WITH CALCITE. ROOF COLLAPSED AFTER ABOUT 20 YDS, BUT IS PASSABLE WITH CARE, TUNNEL ENDS IN BOULDER CLAY WALL ABOUT 10 YDS AFTER ROOF FALL, WHETHER MINE DID ACTUALLY END HERE IS DEBATABLE, AS THERE IS A DROP OF ABOUT 10 FEET TO THE LEFT OF THE TUNNEL FACE. A LOT OF PROPS AND OLD BROWN PLANKING IS VISIBLE AROUND THE LEFT HAND EDGE OF THIS HOLE. MOST OF THE MINE APPEARS TO FOLLOW FAULTS, LITTLE ORE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN FOUND, AND SEEMS TO BE A VERY EXPENSIVE TRIAL?? AFTER DINNER, WENT UP TO SCAR WHERE SMALL HEAPS, SOME HOLES AND BELL PIT HOLLOWS CAN BE SEEN. WERE WAS FOUND VERY GOOD SPECIMENS OF MALACHITE, COPPER PYRITES, ARAGONITE AND CALCITE. [sketch]."
