| hearsay:- |
The Twelve Men of Wreay can trace their history back to the late 17th century. Documents
in the leather bound book kept by curate William Gaskin, from 1783, include a petition
to Edward Rainbow, Bishop of Carlisle 1664-84. |
|
| From 1786, William Gaskin recorded the regular meetings of the group on Candlemas,
at the Plough Inn, Wreay. Meetings are followed by a meal of oatcakes, bread, cheese
and ale, after which a clay pipe is smoked; all for one shilling (once upon a time). |
||
| Today the group is a registered charity which supports the school and church; the
members are trustees of the School House and Cemetery Cottage. |
