notes:- |
First built as a chapel of ease to Ulverston, when the local population increased,
with the support of William Penny of Penny Bridge Hall. He chose the site overlooking
two villages, 'beautiful for situation'. The parish was then in the Diocese of Chester,
but the new chapel was consecrated by the Bishop of Llandaff, who lived locally, absent
from his see. The chapel was a long low building with a low tower at the west end.
In 1831 it was enlarged, with many free pews; in 1835 a new chancel was added. |
|
In 1864-65 the whole of the nave was rebuilt, by Countess Blucher von Wahlstadt -
a member of the Machell Family. The architect was E G Paley. By 1866 local subscriptions
had provided a new organ built by Wilkinsons of Kendal. A new tower was erected and
necessary repairs carried out in the 1960s, designs by Frearson, built by Atkinsons
of Ayside. |
